Graphic varnish—black, hard, acid-resistant wax in a ball—is applied to a polished, heated graphic plate (zinc or copper) before the etching process begins. When applied using the so-called pencil method, it creates a soft, matte surface, making the etching process clearly visible. The surfaces exposed during etching are then subjected to acid etching in the next stage of the process. Thanks to the varnish’s acid resistance, the surfaces covered with varnish remain intact.
